Problem Statement

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the concept of work and communication as technology becomes increasingly useful in enabling flexibility and connection with others. However, persons with disabilities lack the training to use technology and thus, have limited opportunity to connect with others online through mediums such as the arts.

Solution

SPARKS! programme equips persons with disabilities with the tools and knowledge in technology within the performing arts to express themselves and connect with others through the arts.

Outcomes

The programme aims to:

- Develop technological skills of persons with disabilities

- Connect persons with disabilities with different communities

- Create employment opportunities for persons with disabilities

More about grantee

Founded in 2007, Maya Dance Theatre's (MDT) vision is to create an integral space for Asian dance and contemporary dance, creating an expression that resonates beyond borders but is grounded in the visceral nature of the human spirit. MDT works with youth and special groups to provide arts and dance training. In late 2018, MDT initiated the programme ELEVATE to provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to become semi-professional dance artists. Team members are experienced in working with dancers with special needs.

Kavitha Krishnan (Programme Director) is experienced in providing strong direction to undertake this programme, and was trained as an Occupational Therapist and thus has knowledge in ensuring the programmes are catered to the needs of persons with various disabilities.
