Problem Statement

Lack of Systematic Approach in the Consideration for Appropriate Assistive Technology.

Currently, the process of assessing the needs of persons with disabilities and determining a suitable Assistive Technology product is largely unstructured; it is heavily dependent on the knowledge and experience of the individual who is making the recommendation.

Solution

A Toolkit to Help Individuals and Stakeholders Make More Informed Decisions in the Selection of Appropriate Assistive Technology

The toolkit would be reflective of the information gathered through qualitative research which would comprise 2 components:

1) Survey respondents to understand their skills and abilities, and in-depth interviews would be conducted to learn how users make decisions and the influences that shape decision making;

2) Conduct literature research taking reference from the Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative to:

Understand the extent to which individuals who need Assistive Technology are guided towards making an informed decision by themselves or through the support of relevant stakeholders; and

Uncover the essential services necessary to help the acquisition experience of Assistive Technology smoother.

Outcomes

Persons with disabilities, caregivers, medical professionals and teachers will be able to better use Assistive Technologies to enable those with special needs to learn, work and live more independently.
